Your home for the week is Hotel Kalevala, a distinctive lakeside hotel inspired by Finnish folklore. Spend your days exploring the winter landscape and your evenings unwinding in the warmth of the sauna and bubbling indoor and outdoor jacuzzis.
Meet eager huskies, learn to glide on cross-country skis and follow snowshoe trails into the tranquil taiga forest. After dark, venture away from the lights and look up: with clear skies and a little luck, the Northern Lights may make your evening unforgettable.
With beginner-friendly activities and time to enjoy the surroundings at your own pace, this holiday brings together adventure, warm hospitality and well-earned relaxation.

Your winter week
Day 1 – Welcome to Kuhmo
Arrive at Kajaani Airport and enjoy your transfer to Hotel Kalevala. Settle into your room, enjoy dinner and let the peaceful atmosphere ease you into your winter holiday.
Day 2 – Your first tracks on cross-country skis
Discover one of Finland’s favourite winter activities during a two-hour cross-country ski lesson. Your guide introduces the basics at an easy pace, helping you build confidence and enjoy moving through the snow.
Skiing equipment is available throughout your stay, so you can practise your new skills during your free time.
Day 3 – Meet the huskies
A memorable day with sled dogs awaits! After a transfer of approximately 45 minutes, arrive at the husky farm and meet the enthusiastic team ready to take you into the winter landscape.
Enjoy a 6 km husky safari along snowy forest trails and across open fields, with the opportunity to swap drivers along the way. Afterwards, thank your team with plenty of affection and capture a few favourite moments on camera.
Warm up with hot juice and cookies while your guide shares stories about Alaskan huskies, their daily lives and their care.
Day 4 – A snowshoe journey through the taiga
Step into the stillness of the winter forest on a guided two-hour snowshoe walk. This beginner-friendly excursion takes you through snowy woodland and peaceful lakeside scenery.
Pause, take a deep breath and enjoy the simple pleasure of being surrounded by nature.
Day 5 – Snowshoes beneath the northern sky
As darkness falls, put on your snowshoes and follow your guide away from the streetlights. Travel through the forest and, conditions permitting, across a frozen lake and snow-covered bog to experience the quiet of the northern night.
Stop for warming hot juice and watch the sky. If conditions are right, you may see the Northern Lights dancing overhead.
Day 6 – Discover the fun of sliding snowshoes
Try a playful way to explore the snow! Sliding snowshoes combine features of skis and snowshoes, allowing you to walk and glide through the winter landscape.
Begin with an introduction to the technique, then head out on a guided excursion to put your new skills into practice.
Day 7 – Until next time
Enjoy your final breakfast before your transfer to Kajaani Airport. Leave with fresh winter memories, rosy cheeks and stories to share.
Make the most of your free time
Keep the winter fun going with kick-sledding, tobogganing or a leisurely walk. Make snow angels, explore Kuhmo’s museums or simply settle into a quiet moment at the hotel.
For more adventure, ask about optional activities such as a fatbike tour, ice fishing or rapid swimming. Optional activities are available at an additional cost and are subject to availability and suitable conditions.
