Monastery hiking Valamo to Lintula monastery
Monastery to monastery hike The monastery hike connects the only two Orthodox monasteries in Finland: the monastery of Valamo and the Lintula nunnery. The route is 20 km long in one direction. The route includes a variety of narrow paths, with suitable transition sections along sandy roads in between. An annual crusade procession follows the route of the monastery pilgrimage from Valamo to Lintula.
The varied Luostarivaellus route takes in the varied terrain of eastern Finland. In addition to trails, the route includes longitudinal paths and sandy roads. Halfway along the route is the neat and spacious Taivalkota, where you can enjoy a picnic lunch by the fire. There are also interesting sights along the route, such as the Taivallahti canal and the Palok hydroelectric power station. The Taivallahti Canal is listed as a nationally significant built cultural environment. The Taivallahdi Canal is part of the Heinävesi waterway, one of Finland's national landscapes. The hiking trail ends at Lintula Monastery.
